An Introduction to our New Priest-in-Charge

Father Tom Haynes is a “cradle” Episcopalian. His father was an Episcopal priest, and he grew up in the church. He finished high school in Columbia, SC and attended the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. He majored in English and taught English for eight years after earning his B.A.
In 1992, Fr. Tom earned an M.S.T in Math from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, TN. He then taught math until 2013. He was Microsoft and Novell certified in the 1990’s and worked with instructional technology and network administration while teaching math at MTSU and two high schools in the Rutherford County school system.
In 2000, the Haynes family moved to Indiana where they attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Fr. Tom was elected to the vestry and served as Sr. Warden. In 2005 he told Bishop Little that he thought he was called to ordained ministry, and with the help of a group from St. Thomas and the Culver Academies, he discerned a call to the priesthood. He began the process with the diocese to prepare for ordination. The formation process included work with the Northern Indiana School of Theology, Notre Dame and Virginia Theological Seminary
In 2009, Fr. Tom was called to St. Elizabeth’s in Culver where he served as Lay Pastoral Leader, Deacon and then Priest. He was bi-vocational for four years and continued to teach. In 2013, Fr. Tom accepted a call to serve as Priest-in-Charge at St. Thomas, and he left the math classroom at the Culver Academies for full-time parish work with a wonderful congregation.
Fr. Tom’s wife is also an Episcopal priest, and she is the Rector at St. Paul’s in Mishawaka. They have two children. The Haynes family lives in South Bend.
